What is Yeast City Housing? Yeast City Housing was the first social housing company in the City of Tshwane and one of the first in South Africa. It wants to ensure decent, affordable housing in the inner city, and to contribute to inner city regeneration through well-managed social housing.
It maintains that housing is more than shelter: · It therefore works to develop integrated, healthy neighbourhoods with housing at its core · It is about building lives, families and communities |
|
Yeast City Housing was created through the work or Pretoria Community Ministries, and is owned by six inner city churches. It was registered as a separate legal entity in 1998, in terms of Section 21 of the Companies Act (not for profit). It is also registered with the Social Housing Registrar of Gauteng Province.
Who are our residents? Our residents are currently people earning below R3,500 per month. They might be lower-income working people in the formal sector, informal traders, self-employed, or domestic workers. Some of them are disability pensioners. A large percentage or our tenants are women with small children.
Scope of our projects YCH is creating a mix of transitional, communal, special needs and institutional housing, thereby facilitating a diversity of tenure options and housing types It will continue to experiment in terms of offering the best possible product at the most affordable price, but also in terms of creating attractive, budget-based housing that contributes towards beautiful inner city places. |
